I am referring to the church by the name used in the records of the
Rockcastle Baptist
Association. It is also called Wellhope. Any reference on this website to
Wellhope or Hopewell is to the same community and/or church.
Hopewell Baptist Church was located on the East Fork of Skeggs Creek. The
church was formed in 1851 "by a presbytery made up of members from Flat
Lick, Mt. Pleasant, and Freedom."
The church was an original member of the RBA; the first Association annual
meeting was held at Hopewell in 1871.
Some families found early at Hopewell were later members at
Mt. Pisgah, which
was formed later and was closer to where some of the Renner, Cromer, Linville,
McClure, and Prewitt families lived.
From the RBA minutes of 1896 from the report of the Committee of Destitution:
"We beg leave to report as follows: Brethren we have four churches in the
southern part of this Association that are destitute of preaching: Hopewell,
Mt. Pisgah, Pleasant Valley, and Pine Hill."
Following is a list of members of the Hopewell Baptist Church (maiden names of
known females are in parentheses; I have also corrected some spellings). This
list comes from the early church records and obituary information in the
Association records. In parentheses for some individuals is a death date. These
dates are from the church and Association records. Notations of "d.
abt." are from the Association records and indicate the person died
between meetings, i.e. between Sep 1882 and Sep 1883. |
