Below, following the discussion, are photos of the Bowman-Deaton Cemetery. The name is my invention as this cemetery is not listed in the Rockcastle County cemetery book, and, as far as I know, it doesn't have an official name. The name I am using comes from it being located on land once owned by the Deaton family and because most of the burials I can identify have Bowman connections. The cemetery, which has perhaps 40 or so graves (three with readable stones), is on the side of a hill a short distance northwest of the old road that once led from present-day Hwy. 1249 down into the Walnut Grove valley (see road #3 on the Rockcastle roads map). The following people have readable stones in this cemetery, all erected long after the original burials: 1. Martha A. Rowe Vance, 1879-1925. She was the daughter of John Thomas Rowe and Sarah Emeline Doan. She married George Vance, son of Wallace Vance and Margaret Jane Bowman. 2. Hubert Shirley Vance, 1909-1911. He was the son of George and Martha Rowe Vance. 3. William Joseph Renner, 1884-26 Oct 1907. He was the son of Jacob H. Renner and Sarah Elizabeth Bowman. From a family source, we know the following persons are also buried here (dates are all approximate): 4. Thomas Bowman, b. 1834, d. bet. 1900-1910 5. Susan Bowman, b. 1833, d. bet. 1900-1910, wife of Thomas 6. James Caleb Hayes, b. Jan 1854, d. bet. 1900-1910, son of Colbert and Mary Payne Hayes 7. Julia Bowman Hayes, b. 1858, d. aft, 1910, daughter of Thomas and Susan, wife of James Caleb Hayes 8. Martha Jane Hayes Taylor, b. 1894, daughter of James and Julia Bowman Hayes, wife of John Taylor 9. At least two young children of Logan and Fannie Dyer Arnold ![]() ![]() |
